New Season, New changes at Chesspark.

As you may know, Chesspark has undergone some changes as of September 10th, so we’d like to let you know what’s going on, and why.

First, we’ve made many updates to the Chesspark client and server this month, to continue the improvements in speed and stability we made in August — including improvements to the process of adjourning and reconvening games. These and many other bug fixes mean that you are now playing in the fastest and most stable version of Chesspark ever!

We are also pleased to announce that we have just launched the pre-move feature which many people requested.  Pre-Move is the ability to make your move before it’s technically your turn, thus saving valuable time in bullet and blitz chess. It’s a brilliant idea, you asked for it, and we delivered. To give it a try, turn on pre-move under Game Options in your Chesspark web client.

Free members will have noticed that we have now made bullet and blitz games available to PRO members only.  If you are a free member, you will now only be able to play 15 and and 30 minute games. This decision was made in order to allow us to continue to offer free limited accounts, while at the same time giving our PRO users the maximum rewards for upgrading, while still allowing others to play for free with a limited account, with the option to upgrade at any time.

Unlike other chess communities, we’re always finding new ways to enhance our service and make it unique. An example is our new hand-drawn piece theme – please check it out. We promise to continue to push the envelope on your behalf and we’re always open to your suggestions. Is there a feature that would make Chesspark even better? Tell us!

Finally, for those of you who are long time free members, we haven’t forgotten you are a valuable part of the Chesspark community.  Stay tuned to the blog over the next week or so for an exciting announcement that we think you will like!

UNM hosts IM Irina Krush and IM David Pruess.

On Thursday September 19th, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque hosted a simultaneous match that pitted International Masters Irina Krush and David Pruess against players from the local chess community. About 30 players and others from the chess community in New Mexico showed up to listen to David Pruess speak about chess strategy in one of his recent wins, and then pit their wits against the Masters in a simultaneous match

Chesspark was there as well, handing out some 3 month Chesspark memberships, so look for some new Chesspark members from New Mexico soon and if you meet them, ask them how they did against IM Pruess and IM Krush.  We weren’t able to stay for the whole event, but Art Byers of the New Mexico Chess Organization planned to hand out certificates to any players who could win or draw against the Masters.

    The game of the week: Team Spirit

    Chesspark launched the Chesspark College Association in the last week. Lot of good players plays in this team competition. I would like to show you a nice game from the championship which was played between UTB’s IM Daniel Fernandez aka D-Fernandez and Miami’s NM Ernesto Alverez aka Skaternesto. After a crazy game with lots of tactics, Skaternesto managed to pull of the upset of the evening making the score UTB 1- Miami 1.

    The International Master decided to play an agressive opening with black, the Ben-oni defense. He attacked the center by moving the e-pawn and he plan later to move the f-pawn to f5 to gain space.

    Fernandez found a brilliant way to save both the knight and the f5 rook. If white capture the f5 rook with pawn, then the queen moves to g5 to give check and give checkmate on g2 in the next move.

    This knight move looked good, it attacked the queen, but blocked the rook and white has a nice double-threat move to attack the rook and threatening to win the queen. Black should have moved the knight to e7 to defend.

    The rook moved to h8 to win time for white, because if king captures then queen can come with check on h5, then the only move for black is to move back to g8, then the queen moves to h7 to force the king to g6 and the bishop finish the game by moving g6 to give the checkmate. If the king not captures the h8 rook, but moves to f7, then bishop moves to g6 to give the check. King should capture it and then queen moves to h5 to give a beautiful checkmate :)
